We are in Brasov a beautiful town, and all the nicer for being at the foot of Mt Tampa. So we caught an antique cable car to the top and spent and hour or so walking down through the forest, enjoying the occasional view of the mediaeval town. We haven't been able to do that anywhere thus far.
We have just one more day here, so some reflections:
- We have never felt the least bit threatened, intimidated, harrassed.....anything. This really is one of the safest places we have visited, partly due to the people who will try to speak English and go out of their way to be helpful
- Far more Western in feel than we expected, with grand buildings, funky coffee shops, big piazzas
- Food!!! so cheap and so delicious, although we cannot understand, with the strong German Saxon influence, why there are so many pizza and pasta restaurants. Favourite foods: cabbage rolls ("samales") with polenta and sour cream; all the soups ("cjorba"); papanasi (a freshly made donut/kitchener bun thing served hot with their home made sour cherry conserve and sour cream....to die for!; and Romanian wine. Our average 3 course meal (not done often) with wine AUD40
- The appalling drivers - Lester did a great job driving defensively to avoid them
- Beautiful churches in every town, large or small
- Good quality accommodation, on average between AUD60 - 80, with breakfast

So now it's Goodbye Romania, Hello Greece
