frescoes, both internal and external.
Seven are UNESCO world heritage listed,
with an eighth under consideration at present.
The monasteries (many still functioning)
were built after a historic event
(usually a battle victory) and the frescoes
were to educate illiterate peasants about the
bible or event.
They are quite beautiful, particularly inside (no photos allowed) - Lester call them "heavily tattoed churches"!
